Treens and I love weddings! We love to see what unique plans the bride and groom have come up with for their big day, and how we can best reflect those moments so they stay special forever. That’s one area that I (Kirk) absolutely thrive on. I love it when something amazingly special happens on the day that we weren’t expecting and we’ve only got a limited amount of time to work out how to frame, light and capture the shot perfectly each time. We do, however, love to have the time to plan and prepare our unique shots and ask our couples to let us know anything unusual or particulary special that will be happening on the wedding day that we need to be aware of.
Below are a few things that you definitely should remember to let your photographer know before the day.
This one can include a lot of things but here are some examples.
Pictures of your grandparents wedding portrait on their wedding day tied to your very own bouquet.. Now THAT’S really something!
Here we have one of our bride’s Kadie, showing her mum this very special surprise. You can see mum’s reaction and her grandma’s emotion as she see’s herself as a bride on her granddaughters flowers. Treens was behind the camera for this and it was one of her favourite moments.
Yeah, this is sometimes just a reality of family. Treens and I chat a lot to the guests during photo time and set up the shots by asking people to stand in certain positions. It’s great if we can know of any situations that we need to be sensitive to – divorces, deaths, etc. Always a good idea to give your photographer the heads up!
The above photo was taken at Brendon and Carla’s wedding at Flaxton Gardens. They wanted to go for something a little different with their family photos. Love it!
You might have planned to play some funky and up-beat music as your bridal party strut their stuff down the aisle like Brendon and Carla did at their amazing Flaxton Gardens wedding.
You might have a special piece of cake just for your fiancé like Deb did for her new husband Dan. His favourite was Black Forest cake and that’s what he got! Great surprise 🙂
Have you arranged a First Look? If so, your photographer will obviously want to know about that one! 😃 A first look is where you and your fiance get to see each other and have a quiet moment BEFORE you walk down the aisle. Some couples like to have some couple photos done at this time too so they can spend more time with their guests after the ceremony.
Matt & Mel chose to do a first look. It was really sweet and special. An honour to be there in that moment.
Are you going to sing a special song to your fiancé during the ceremony or reception? This is such a lovely idea (if you’re a good singer that is… 😃) Check this one out. We didn’t shoot this wedding (unfortunately) but wow! It does also help if you have a few backup singers and a choir on hand too…
It could be as small as getting your groomsmen to wear some whacky socks like the image below.
Or secretly inviting your fiancé’s family member who originally said she couldn’t make it to the wedding but has found a way to get there. This is something we definitely love to know about before hand.
As family photos take up a chunk of time, it’s a very good idea to discuss what combinations you’re going to want and how many there are going to be. Some families are big and some are small so this time is always different for everyone. The family photos can be the cause of rushed bridal party photos or the bridal party returning back late to the reception. Treens and I always make sure we have a full family photo wedding checklist beforehand and some extra time to spare.
Some photographers have a certain style of image that they stick to and may not be comfortable with some of your suggestions. Make sure you let them know ahead of time so they can either prepare accordingly or point you in the direction of a photographer who would so that style. We LOVE LOVE LOVE when our brides (and the odd groom) show us shots (often from Pinterest) that they love. Usually brides scour Pinterest to add to their wedding checklist of ideas and can come across a beautiful photo that sparks an emotion in their heart. They want this shot…and if so, we want to know about it! In fact, Treens and I always try to go one better than the photo that couples show us and BLOW THEIR MINDS when they get their photos back. It’s a secret little competition we have with Pinterest….
A Pinterest photo idea that one of our K&T Couple wanted to try:
What we shot for them.
Here are some examples of what some of our K&T Brides showed us and what we did on the day.
Steven and Sue-Ann showed us this one and asked if we could put a Star Wars spin on it… (little did they know about my secret Star Wars geekiness and my ample photoshop experience 🙂

Here’s what we delivered to our K&T Couple.
A lovely gift and note to your fiancé to read before you both meet to tie the knot.
Some secret cufflinks for the father of the bride to wear or for the groom and groomsmen as a surprise for the bride.
Matching slippers and dressing gowns for your bridesmaids
Now THIS is a cute idea! How special for the bridesmaids!
or even fake moustaches/monobrows! …Let’s move on shall we…
Are you going to wear that same perfume that you wore when you first met?
Apart from the obvious need to prepare for these special moments, there are also a few other reasons to let us know about these things. Now I’m going to try not to sound like some lame, try-hard photographer when I say this but when Treens and I shoot your wedding, we want to make sure we snap those moments that carry the big emotions with them. Of course we capture the wedding day as it unfolds but it’s these tiny, yet, massively significant moments that Treens and I really want to ‘bottle’ for you and your husband, children and quite possibly grand-children to remember. Don’t leave something like this to chance on your wedding day. Your photographer hopefully wants to know about even the smallest of details….it’s their job after all!
The other big reason for us is the albums that we create for you. These 7 things above REALLY need to be included in your wedding album. These are the moments that make a little deeper than just the run-of-the-mill wedding album. These are the things that Treens and I pride ourselves on capturing for our couples. As well as a whole heap of super-awesome-fun photos from the day as well 😃
Please let us know if we missed anything!
Blessings from Treens and I!
