In the “Kirk Loves” part of our website, our chickens made it onto his list. He calls them his chookie girls and he really does love them. They get special treatment in the way of bugs (Kirk will sometimes forage for the bugs to give to the chooks!), gives them a treat of molasses occasionally and some apple cider vinegar to give them a detox when he feels the need. He even lets them into the house sometimes! So you can understand his heartache when our girls were not only taken by a pair of lose neighbourhood dogs, but Mr Fox decided to come knocking and was so hungry for chicken that he penetrated our fox-proof fort (foxes can fit through TINY little slits btw).
So a few weeks ago, I got him new girls! Now his quiver is full with not only our son Judah, but 10 feathery girls. They are now laying delicious eggs, and in the next few weeks we should be set for a massive amount of them. I do a fair bit of baking and Kirk, Judah and I usually eat 2 eggs each for breakfast every day, so whatever is left will go to the neighbours, my parents and to be sold to help pay for the feed….only the best organic feed for Kirk’s chookie girls, and the quality of the eggs will reflect it (like they did in the past…but let’s not talk about that)!
And of course, all the chook poo goes straight to our huge veggie garden after being aged for a few months. Look at that broccoli and kale in the background! Massive!!!
How many chooks do you guys have?
