Kirk and I have decided to build our 17 month old son (Judah) a sandpit in our backyard. What were we thinking…
It all came about when we were drawing up a layout for our land on a big piece of A3 paper. Actually before that it was Pinterest’s fault. We were so motivated over a beer as the sun set over our property. Oh, we could build this here and that there. The opportunities were endless. I got out the coloured crayons and we drew our backyard dreams. Of course, most of those dreams were based around what our kid would like as he grows up.
We already have some fruit trees, a chook pen (chook-less at the moment thanks to a neighbourhood dog attack:(…and a fox ), some gardens around the house, a veggie patch and lots and lots of grass. Actually, we live on 2.5 acres of grass pretty much! The crayon plans looked awesome and elaborate, so we chunked them up into “zones”. Zone 1 = The Sandpit.
I mapped it out on the grass with a garden hose and started chipping away. Kirk got out the chainsaw and cut up some logs for the sandpit edging. Judah ate dirt and threw clumps of grass back into the hole I was clearing. I lasted about 15 minutes before putting down the pick and going inside for a drink with Judah. This was my pattern for a few weeks, until today when we woke up all motivated and removed all the grass from The Sandpit zone and even started to remove the dirt. It was a family affair as you can see.
* Can you see Judah’s mini pumpkin on the left? It was nibbled by a possum last night. Just an all-round cute side note 🙂
So, we have a dirt hole in our yard now. It looks productive…yet exhausting at the same time. Next up is more dirt removal and digging, putting in the sandpit base with shade cloth, digging in the log edging, filling it with sand, keeping the cat out and the kid in, putting in some boulders and a garden, and having a slippery slide coming down from the side. I kid you not.
Oh, what have we done.
